Day 8 - Cardiff

Wow - what a day of ups and downs.

The day started with seeing the info on the game last night - we had been told it was a rugby game and I found out this morning it was a qualifying match for the FIFA world cup!   How disappoiinting - firstly I wanted to see a soccer match whilst we were over here... but it was a world cup qualifier and we missed it!

Anyway the day picked up from there as we headed off to the Doctor Who Experience.  Wow, wow, wow!  It starts with an interactive experience where you "meet" the current doctor and enter the tardis - literally walk through the police doors and into  a replica of the TARDIS.  You fight the daleks and even walk through a garden of weeping angels.  Very cool!

Then you walk through into the actual exhibit.... so much to see

There were bits and pieces from all episodes of Doctor Who, including cybermen from the beginning to now and also the sonic screwdrivers from each series.
There was information and outfits from each of the doctors
Including my favourite David Tennant and the current doctor Matt Smith.
There was also spots for each of the doctors companions and helpers.
It was an amazing exhibit and we had such a great time
Unfortunately from there things went a little downhill.  I had planned this trip around us being in Cardiff on a Saturday afternoon as it was the only time they did a Dr Who tour - where they take you around the local area to show you all the places Torchwood and Dr Who is filmed.  The problem was that the information I had been given was incorrect and the bus trip that was supposed to take 6 minutes actually took 45!  (oh and the driver stopped for a smoke part way around the trip).  So we ended up arriving at the bus stop 10 minutes after our tour departed!
Yes I did kind of lose it a little then and had a little meltdown.
But then my best friend google stepped in and off we headed!

We found our way to Mermaid Quay where I was looking for ianto's door into the hub - the back door that Gwen appears at with pizza!  After worrying we wouldn't find it I led us down the boardwalk and couldn't miss it.  In the children of the earth series of Torchwood Ianto Jones is killed saving the earth and the doorway has been turned into a shrine for Ianto.  So many messages and posters for a fictional character!

Then we went to the Milennium Centre to find the invisibilty step/perception filter to find they are doing renovations and we couldn't go stand on the step.... however we got to see it and that was very exciting.

With a free afternoon we decided to hop on the Cardiff sightseeing bus and explore the town.  Our tour guide was an older lady who had grown up in Cardiff and had lots of stories of the olden days and growing up in the coal town.  Very interesting.

All in all - even with the big disappointments it was a great day.

  1. The Dr who experience looks amazing! Sorry about the 'hiccups' but so pleased you were able to find the torchwood spots anyway. T xoxo
