Day 15 - Salisbury

Wow - what a day of history!

This morning started with us walking into town - apparently there are two ways to walk - straight down the road which is about one mile or the scenic route via the river Avon which about 1 1/2 miles.  They forgot to include the route where Tony had the map and was navigating!  Which meant we headed for the river, missed the turn off, did an almost complete circle and started back up near where we started!

We found the river eventually and it was worth the trip.  What a gorgoues river.
After stopping in at the post office to send some mail home we caught the double decker bus and headed out to Stonehenge.  Being in a place like this just fills you with awe - especially as you walk around listening to the audio guide detailing the specifics of the rocks etc.
We took so many photos and spent heaps of time strolling around and just staring.  I had heard so muuch about it being roped off etc butt seriously it is one rope at about knee height and does not impact your view or the atmosphere of these monoliths.
What a magnificent sight it was.
Here is a representation of what it would have looked like if all the stones were still there.
From there we came back into Salisbury and after strolling around town we headed for Salisbury - this is another place my Mum had visited on her trip to England and also one that she had mentioned visiting with her family.  It had also been recommended to us by quite a few people and I am glad we went.

It really is another awesome sight - the sheer height and the detail is mind blowing - expecially considering how long ago this was constructed.
Inside the cathderal the detail kept going.  There were beautiful stained glass windows and cornice work, statues, memorials, plaques etc etc.  Simply amazing.  There were lots of private prayer rooms as well and when we were in the cathedral they we rehearsing for a special service tonight which meant the whole time we were walking around the choir was singing songs of worship and the sounds echoed around - the acoustics were unbelievable!
Tasha lit a candle and I dedicated it to Mum's memory.  It was another of those bittersweet moments but one I am so glad I was part of.
Unfortunately with the Friends of the Cathedral Service on this evening some areas of the church shut early which meant we didn't get to spend as much time as I would have liked and also that Kyle did not get to see the thing he really wanted to see - the original of the Magna Carta.

From there we spent some more time taking in the sights of Salisbury before grabbing some dinner and heading home to watch a brand new episode of Dr Who!
We have to say goodbye to England soon so I spent some time today grabbing photos of typical english sights for us to remember.

Todays tally

Steps taken:  13646
Days left in England:2
Blisters on feet:  2
Amount of awe and wonder: unmeasureable!
